Varsity Football V TRAILL (lost 3-0)

A change of tactics and formation was required for this fixture against TRAILL after a 6-0 defeat to RIS a couple of weeks ago. The formation was 3-2-1 and the tactics were simple; concede possession and catch our opposition on the counter attack; get everybody behind the ball and keep the shape! We agreed that everybody, except the striker, would get behind the ball when our opponents maintained possession. The team maintained good shape for the first 10 minutes and we created the first opportunity of the game after Pan created space and time for himself and played a beautiful pass to Dylan; we didn’t take this glorious chance in front of goal, however, Pan continued to pick the ball up from midfield and create chances for the attackers. We missed two 1 on 1’s with the goalkeeper as the fans watched eagerly. Some of the supporters couldn’t believe that it was all one-way traffic from the Lions. We continued to create chances, this time it was Yuta who played a long ball to our striker, who couldn’t take the chance. I was beginning to think that this might not be our night after a series of missed opportunities!

With less than 5 minutes until half time, it was TRAILL, with their first chance on goal who scored the first goal of the game. Half time 1-0 to TRAILL. The boys showed passion, commitment, dedication, patience and desire!

The second half started quite slow with both teams happily keeping the ball in their own half. TRAILL score two quick goals in the space of 5 minutes and the game was all but over. A few more chances went begging for our attackers before the final whistle was blown. Full time score: 3-0 to TRAILL. We did manage to score a nice goal through First in the friendly after the game.
